Safer Sun Protection

It has been HOT and sunny around here, feeling more like mid summer than mid spring.  We've been spending a lot of time outside and it's been especially hard to keep Leif clothed out there.  We all know that it's best to cover up and to stay out of the sun during peak hours, but when you can't do that, sunscreen is obviously the next best solution to over exposure.  The latest Environmental Working Group newsletter featured this 2010 Sunscreen Guide and I urge you to check it out before stocking up for the summer season.

If you don't want to take the time to sift through all of the information in the guide, at least check out their recommendations for the best options here. Their Hall of Shame is also worth a peek - some of their picks were pretty surprising.

  1. We must be on the same wavelength today. I just watched Bill Nye The Science Guy on the Science Channel this morning - he did a segment on sunscreen. He talked about how sodium benzoate, which is in many sunscreens, is releasing estrogen into the ocean and is causing some turtles and fish to CHANGE SEX - can you believe it? So, you can check out my blog today at http://montessori-parent.blogspot.com/ for more on this subject. I will also mention your blog! Good info to have. Thanks!

  2. I totally believe it. If you follow the link for the image I pasted you'll see an article about how sunscreen wash off is also thought to be contributing to the bleaching of the coral reefs. All of these chemicals are bound to have some effect...

Will check out your post too - thanks for letting me know!

  4. We are made to feel like criminals if we don't use sunscreen then when we use it we get different cancers..... if we want to use the good stuff (that is never available in the shop near the beach) we have to pay through the nose for it. Another example of how the poor are descriminated against. Good healthy food is expensive, products that are actually good for our bodies are expensive. What is NOT wrong with this picture? I'm opening a natural food store so I can pay wholesale for the good stuff!
